Quality Fishing Adventures Fishing News letter
July 13th, 2007 Hello everyone,
These quarterly email's will keep you all up to date on the fishing coming up for the next 3 months. If you are from out of the area and won't be coming back to town and don't want to receive these updates every 3 months just send me an email back and ask for your name to be removed from the mailing list. The next email will go out the end of September/early October.
So how is everyone doing so far this summer? We are all doing great, but man its hot. 103 degree day in Oregon? What's up with that? The news of the quarter is the boat will be getting a make over for the upcoming season. We have hung new motors this year and will be reupholstering the seats and repainting the boat within a month. Yep, I am very exited in the fact that I am having the boat custom painted and air-brushed by Corbin May. I am so looking forward to seeing what he has in store for our fishing machine. It should be hot!
Well we are coming off a poor spring Chinook season. We knew the Columbia and Willamette would be slow, but the Sandy was fore-casted to be good, it wasn't. The runs were terrible and the water conditions sucked. I am not into fishing when fishing sucks like some others so we didn't do much salmon fishing this spring at all we changed most of the trips to sturgeon trips and that went very well. Some of our other salmon trips didn't want sturgeon and canceled but at least they didn't have to pay for a boat ride like so many others boat were giving this spring. I am so glad we have sturgeon in the spring to bail us out when we get bad salmon runs. On a good note we had a huge jack salmon return. Te number of jacks returning this year correlates to the number of adults returning next year. So in short next spring should be a near record year based on the jack counts this year.
The summer Chinook season was awesome. It was only 2 weeks long but fishing was great as always for those that made sure to book early. Take note of this and book early next year. The Summer Chinook season has been great for us since its opening in 2002. Get on one of these trips next year and find out why. Much better fish and more of them then Spring Chinook plus less crowds.
So lets move on to what coming up in the next 3 months.
Summer Steelhead July, August.
This is a great low pressure season. For some reason most of the locals stay home as they have been lead by the press that fishing is poor in the summer. What this causes is no crowds, empty rivers, and great fishing for the few of us that know where the fish are and what we are doing. The average day is around 8 fish. That's a great day I don't care what time of year it is. We start at the crack of dawn, 5:00 a.m, but we are off the water at 1:00 before it gets hot. We will be fishing Summer Steelhead through mid August so if you want a break from the summer house work give me a call. On our last trip this week we hooked the first chinook within 15 minutes of getting there and had 7 fish on by 9:00.
Over-sized Sturgeon July, August.
That's right, its still big fish season, Monster over-sized sturgeon. These huge fish get over 14 feet in length and 1000 pound. We usually catch between 5 and 7 of these massive fish a day that average of 9 to10 footers. This is truly what we call poor mans marlin fishing. Why go to Mexico and fish all day for 1 marlin. We have big fish and more of them right here. You truly have to go over-sized sturgeon fishing at least once in your life. This is a great time for out of town guests, they will talk about it for years. So far this year we have only had 1 day when we hooked less then 2 fish and on average we hooked 3 or 4 a day. We got out fished by another guide boat1 day in the last month and a half. Its been great. This season will slow mid July and then get going strong again August 1st when the deadline moves up.
Fall Chinook September, October
Here comes the big one! The biggest salmon run of the year. Have you booked your trips yet?? You better if you want a seat. The best dates are filling super fast this year.
Many of you already know that this fall salmon season is the best catch rate season we have in Oregon. For the last 2 years they have closed the river to keeping fish around September 13th leaving us with some of the best catch and release fishing anywhere with some 30 fish days. But this year their (ODFW's) plan is to close the lower Columbia September 4th and keep the upper river open through October for us. What does this mean for us? A great year with 2 trips a day and limits for a month. It will also mean we will book pretty fast with the open season as this will be the best time of the year to put salmon in the freezer. I know a lot of you have plans to book a day or two for September and October, I just don't want to see you call in August and have me tell you sorry we are full. If you want to fish find a day and book it. You will be very happy you did. Day trips start at 7:00 and are $150.00, night trips start at 3:15 and cost $90.00. B oth are great tips with plenty of action.
KEEPER STURGEON October, November
Are you ready for some great keeper Sturgeon fishing? The keeper Sturgeon season opens in October. I only have 5 dates left for sturgeon salmon combo trips in October. If you haven't done a combo trip we start with sturgeon fishing in the morning and then switch to salmon after we limit on sturgeon. Most days we can get a limit or close to for both fish. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) gave us an extra open day this year for sturgeon. The keeper season is now open on Thursday's, Friday's, Saturday's and Sunday's. As always the best fishing will be during the week with hungrier fish and less crowds.
Thanks again for your business and I am looking forward to fishing with you again soon. Have fun with the rest of your summer and be safe out there.
God bless and keep a tight line,
Dan & Sandy Christopher
